Helping Your Children With Your House Move

Moving into a new house is difficult for anyone. There’s a lot of stress, worry and anxiety that you’ll have to deal with, but if you’re moving into a new home with children then it can be more than upsetting for them too! Moving can be an arduous process for a child, especially a younger one, and it’s important that you take the time to help your child adjust. Here are just a few ways in which you can prepare your child for their new home! 1)    Take the time to explain the situation carefully.Moving house can be an overwhelming experience, and it’s important that you sit down with your child and explain the situation to them. Your little ones might have lots of questions, so be prepared to answer anything they want to know! Try to gauge how your child feels about moving house – sometimes it can seem like an exciting adventure, but if your kids have to say goodbye to their friends then it can also be a tough time. Make sure your little ones know that you’re there to support them and that moving house can be exciting! 2)    Let your child join in.It might seem easier to keep your kids out of the way during the moving process, but this can make them feel alienated and unappreciated. Instead, try to involve your child – or at least make it seem as though you are! If you’re decorating then ask for opinions and take the time to pack your child’s room with them if they want the help. Take your child to visit their new home before moving day so that they can picture their room and can start to acclimatise to the idea! 3)    Keep young children away on moving day.Although it’s important that your child feels included in the moving process, very young children shouldn’t be present when it comes to moving day. Moving is stressful and can take a long time, and with all of the worry, heavy lifting, loading and panic, your kids can become upset and worried very easily. Instead try to find a babysitter for the day so that you don’t need to worry! 4)    Decorate your child’s room to their taste.Decorating your child’s room is a great way to get them excited to move house. Whether it’s a surprise or if they’re choosing their own decor, having a painted and decorated bedroom is sure to help your children settle into their new home! 5)    Ensure you’re communicating with your child properly.Even if you have a million and one things to do before you move, make sure that your child is okay and is coping with the process. Talk to them regularly and ensure that they’re prepared to move. Try to get them excited about their change of scenery, and don’t forget to keep them in the loop! 6)    Spend time exploring your new neighbourhood together. Before you move into your new home it’s a good idea to introduce your child to the neighbourhood. Have a walk around the local area and explore everything that there is to see. This can help children cope with moving house, as it alleviates the worry of living in unfamiliar surroundings. Explore child-friendly areas such as parks and shopping centres to find children of similar ages. Help your child to make friends and they’re sure to get on just fine in their new home!
